Behind the Kimono

Behind the Kimono is is the first of many books we have published at View. This book is about the Japanese-inspired art of Andy Price, written by the team at View with Andy. The launch of the book coincided with the exhibition True Identity?, showcasing the art featured in the book.

Here’s an extract from the introduction of the book:

This book follows Andy Price on his incredible journey of discovery through Japan. Having visited the country over twenty times, his breadth of knowledge and observations have resulted in this most exquisite series of paintings.  From the hubbub of Tokyo’s metropolis to the destruction of the aftermath of Hiroshima, Andy has captured the essence of Japan through his own distinctive style. His fascination and love for Japan lies not only in its enchanting visual appearance but stems from a much deeper interest in the traditions, society, customs and even the politics and environmental concerns.

The paintings’ subject matter varies enormously, from cityscapes to Japanese toys, geishas and the famous Japanese bullet train. An admiration for Japan and its diversity is contagious.

This book also provides us with an insight into an enormous creative talent. In addition to painting, it incorporates photography, a reflection of the artist’s intrinsically observational nature.

The geisha and more specifically the traditional garment they wear, the kimono, has been employed as a means to convey observations and thoughts in this collection, and has become the icon for Andy’s recent work. Predominantly set against contemporary backdrops, the patterns of the kimonos raise questions about various contradictions inherent within Japanese society.  The primary focus concerns the conflict between tradition and modernity in Japan.

Each painting is distinctive in appearance and sentiment. However links and connections are provided through the repetition of several themes, painting techniques and even cameo appearances of certain characters. This has the effect of making the works unique in their own right but also enables them to compliment each other as a united series.

The paintings will evoke laughter and tears and question things that may not have been previously considered or imagined. The art of Andy Price aims to present aesthetic beauty and stimulate intellectual and emotional response.
